I came to counselling later in life, which I think is part of what makes this work feel so meaningful to me.

Like many people, I’ve experienced seasons when the roles, relationships and expectations that once shaped my life began to change. I know something about that strange middle ground — when life may look perfectly fine from the outside, but inside you’re wondering, Who am I now? And what comes next?

That experience has shaped the way I work as a counsellor.

I’m interested in what’s happening beneath the surface — the patterns we’ve developed, the roles we’ve taken on, the things we’ve learned to push aside, and the parts of ourselves that may be asking for a little more attention.

My approach is down-to-earth, curious and collaborative.

I work especially with adults navigating midlife and other significant life transitions — changes in relationships, family roles, career, caregiving, empty nesting, retirement, grief and loss, or simply the growing sense that the life that once fit no longer does.

I don’t believe counselling is about reinventing yourself or finding some shiny “new you.” Often, it’s about getting to know yourself more honestly — perhaps letting go of some of what no longer fits and making room for what matters now.

Our work together may involve the following treatment approaches:

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS): Cultivating self-leadership by compassionately engaging with the different parts of ourselves.

  • Narrative Therapy: Exploring how personal stories shape our identities and discovering new ways to reframe and empower our narrative.

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): Unpacking how thoughts and behaviours affect our emotions and decisions.

  • Attachment Theory: Focusing on relationships and bonds (particularly long-term) between people, including those between a parent and child and between romantic partners.

My Story

Ahh, the middle years…

I recall thinking that the middle years felt as though the earth was shifting beneath me with some seismic tremors and an aftershock of - what the hell just happened?  Significant life changes left me feeling disoriented and out of balance.  To secure my footing, I was hanging on to what was- all the while reeling into my new reality. It was at this point that I realized how ‘aging gracefully’ is not a thing but more of a hang-on-tight because here we go kind of thing.

My experience has taught me that it is within these times of life transitions that we can begin to explore what lights us up, what is important now, and ultimately where we want to go from here.  If you are feeling the ground shift- I can help you not just hang on tight- but enjoy the ride.

I look forward to working alongside you,

Karen
